This critically acclaimed play, set in the 1880s in upstate New York during the late 19th century at the home of Dr. Givings and his wife at the dawn of the Age of Electricity, is based on the REAL historical fact that doctors used vibrators to treat “hysteria” in women (and some men). Sarah Ruhl’s poignant feminist rallying cry encourages women to ask for what they want against the constrains of the patriarchy, to express themselves fully and without apology, to pursue dreams beyond marriage and motherhood, and to embrace an understanding of their own bodies and needs.
