American Culture for English Language Learners	AMLA 98	Students will be able to identify and analyze common cultural references in the college setting. Students will be able to recognize and analyze American values. Students will be able to recognize and respond appropriately to American patterns of thinking and behavior to increase cultural competence. Students will be able to compare and contrast native and target cultures to observe past practices and develop integration strategies. Students will be able to interpret significant U.S. historical events and their cultural implications.

American Language Advanced Reading for English Language Learners	AMLA 91	Students will demonstrate acquisition of new vocabulary in a course-embedded tests of either a combination of passive (no more than 50% of the words) and active masteries or active mastery alone. American Language Formal Speaking	AMLA 92	Students will rate their organization of impromptu speeches higher on the post test than on the pre test Students will deliver a two-minute impromptu speech on a given topic using effective delivery, including eye contact, volume, and time.
American Language Intermediate Reading	AMLA 81	Students will demonstrate acquisition of new vocabulary in a course-embedded tests of either a combination of passive (no more than 50% of the words) and active masteries or active mastery alone. AMLA Advanced Grammar for English Language Learners	AMLA 97	Students will combine sentences and reduce clauses for sophistication and variety in the expression of written ideas. Students will generate writing based on selected readings with mostly accurate syntax and awareness of rhetorical choices. Students will compose paragraphs and essays on a variety of academic topics with clarity and style. Students will demonstrate fluency and accuracy of grammatical precepts in both spoken and written English. Students will demonstrate consistent accurate use of proper verb tense and forms in writing
AMLA Grammar Foundations for English Language Learners	AMLA 87	Students will combine sentences successfully to connect ideas in a clear and logical way. Students will create authentic writing based on academic readings, using accurate sentence structure and grammatical rules. Students will apply English grammar rules effectively and develop fluency and accuracy in both written and spoken English. Students will utilize grammar editing software to check for grammatical errors and improve self-produced writing. Students will use critical thinking strategies to analyze writing, understanding their grammar strengths and areas needing improvement.

Idiomatic English	AMLA 83	Students will score better on a 35 question test which measures the ability to recognize correct usage of common English idioms. On exiting the course, students will be able to define literal vs. figurative language
