Sarah MacLean

Hello! I am a queer, cisgender white woman, a full-time professor, and a first-generation college student.

As a full-time professor at Mt. SAC, I teach Bio 6, Humans and the Environment, which introduces students to modern environmental issues like pollution, climate change, and biodiversity conservation, including actions we can all take to live more sustainably. I also teach Bio 1, our General Biology course for non-majors. Before teaching at Mt. SAC, I was a research ecologist with a focus on birds! I've studied chickadees in the forests of upstate New York, trained captive falcons, monitored seabird breeding colonies in Maine (ask me about my seagull scars...), searched for endangered ducks in Alaska, and surveyed century-scale bird community changes at 70 sites across the state of California.

When I'm not doing science, you can find me snuggling with my two cats, lamenting over the alkalinity levels in my saltwater aquarium, and reading/writing fantasy novels.
