Rep. CisnerosMt. SAC’s Congressional Representative Gilbert R. Cisneros, Jr. (CA-39) announced $99 million in coronavirus aid for students, colleges, and universities in California’s 39th District through the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act. Of those funds, Mt. SAC is set to receive $17,457,959.

Rep. Cisneros“Our schools have had to abruptly shut down and transition to online learning, upending the lives of countless students, many of whom rely on their school for food and housing,” said Rep. Cisneros. “In the bipartisan CARES Act, Congress made sure that we provide support for our students and higher education institutions to help get them through this difficult time.”

U.S. Capitol on $50 billHalf of the $17.5 million ($8,728,980) must be available to students in the form of emergency cash grants to help students pay for housing, food, and other basic essentials. The other half is to help schools offset financial losses from the outbreak.

Dr. Wiliam Scroggins“This will be a considerable boost for our students who are trying to continue their education and further their earning power for themselves and their families,” said President and CEO, Dr. William Scroggins. “With the college closed and unable to support special populations like foster youth or undocumented students, part of the funds will allow them to have access to the necessary resources”

The college is set to release information for students to apply for the emergency grants in the near future.
