  • Get Ready

We want you to do your best on the day of your test so that you get the results you deserve. To help you succeed, read our list of top tips for getting a good IELTS score.

    Be prepared:

    • Check the time and date of your test.
    • Set an alarm and leave enough time to get to the test center without rushing.
    • Bring the same identification document that you used when you booked your test. This is important. You won’t be able to take your test if you bring the wrong ID or forget to bring it.
    • Consider reviewing test prep materials in advance, available here.

    Relax:

    • Stay calm and focus on each question.
    • If you start to feel worried, take some deep breaths to help you calm down.
    • Read the questions carefully and don’t rush your answers.

    Follow the instructions:

    • Read the IELTS rules and regulations before the test so you understand them.
    • You will be asked to leave all of your personal belongings in a safe place outside the test room. Make sure you switch off your mobile phone and any other electronic devices, so they do not disturb other test takers.
    • You will do the Listening, Reading, and Writing sections in one test session. This takes 2 hours 40 minutes, and there are no breaks between each section of the test. Make sure you go to the restroom before you enter the test room.
    • Have something to eat and drink before the test. You are not allowed to take food into the test room. You can take water into the test room if it is in a clear (transparent) bottle.
    • Listen to the test supervisor carefully and follow their instructions.
    • Read the instructions before you write your answers.
    • Read the questions carefully to avoid simple mistakes.

    Watch the time:

    • Watches are not allowed in the test room, but every test room in our test centers has a clock on the wall. If you are taking a test online there is a clock on the screen. Stay aware of the time so you can attempt all the questions.
    • The Listening, Reading, and Writing tests have multiple sections. Allow enough time to attempt each section.
    • Some questions have suggested time limits for you to follow and these are related to the number of marks available. Questions with longer time limits are usually worth more marks.

Still have a question? If you need more information on the day or before the day of your test, please contact us.

  • Get Your Results

IELTS on Computer test takers will no longer receive a paper copy of the Test Report Form. An electronic version of the Test Report Form is available on the Test Taker Portal.

    Check online:
You may also view your results in your IELTS USA Online Registration System.

    Additional TRFs:
Test takers are entitled to request an unlimited number of electronic Test Report Forms and five (5) paper copies of the Test Report Form free of charge to be sent directly to recognizing organizations, within 2 years of test date.

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) no longer requires the test taker to provide a paper copy for the purpose of verifying IELTS scores. IRCC has the ability to verify test taker results using the Test Report Form (TRF) number.

Please contact us for further information on additional TRFs.

    Enquiry on results:
If you are not satisfied with your IELTS results, you can apply for a review and re-mark of your score(s) through a service called an Enquiry on Results (EOR) within 6 weeks after your test date.

If you wish to take the next step to have your IELTS re-marked, you will need to log in to your IELTS account, open the Results page and click on "Improve your score". Follow the instructions on the Portal. The Enquiry on Results (EOR) fee will be refunded if the review results in a score change.

Your result may become available on the same day as your application and up to 21 days after your application. The amount of time it takes to provide results depends on several factors, including the number of sections you’ve asked us to re-mark. If you have not received a response after 21 days, please contact us.

  • Cancellations & Refunds

Requests to transfer or cancel your IELTS must be submitted in writing by email to testingcenter@mtsac.edu. Transfer or cancellation requests made via telephone will NOT be accepted

Please refer to the US terms and conditions here.

    Cancellations:
You can cancel your IELTS test registration at any time before taking your test by notifying your test center. Refund policy is dependent upon when you cancel and whether exceptional circumstances apply.

    Transfers:
You may change your test date at any time before the test. However, your transfer request may be treated as a cancellation dependent on how near to the test day it is made.

You must select a new test date, where available, within three months of your original test date. If your preferred test date is more than three months after your original test date, your transfer will be treated as a cancellation.

You can only transfer the same booking once.

    Exceptional circumstances and special consideration:
If you are taking any IELTS test in the United States, please refer to the Special consideration and exceptional circumstances policy for US Test Takers which differs slightly.

On rare occasions, there may be instances where you are unable to attend your test or are disadvantaged on the test day owing to illness, injury, or another exceptional event outside your control and you no longer qualify for a standard cancellation, refund or transfer close to the test date. In these cases, including instances such as bereavement, civil unrest or domestic crisis, you may make an application to your test center for special consideration due to exceptional circumstances. You can find more information on this process here.

Under certain circumstances outside of test center control, we may have to cancel your test and transfer it to a future date. These circumstances include, but may not be limited to, extreme weather conditions, natural disaster, civil unrest, industrial action, global pandemic or for reasons of force majeure.

In these circumstances, your test center will provide you with as much notice as possible and give you the choice of either a full refund, or a transfer to a future test date – whichever you prefer.

If your test is cancelled or postponed due to other circumstances such as technical failure, venue or environmental factors, your test center will provide you with as much notice as possible and give you the choice of a refund or a transfer to a future test.

    Retaking the test:
If you do not get the IELTS score you wanted, you can apply to take the test again as soon as you feel ready.

Before you make a new booking, remember that your score is unlikely to improve without extra work to improve your English.

Have a look at our sample test questions and preparation materials before you book your test. You might also want to take an official IELTS practice test to check that you have improved before booking another test.

You may also now have the chance to retake just one part of your test. Find out more about IELTS One Skill Retake (available around the world starting in 2023).

    Requesting a re-mark:
If you are not happy with your result, you can request a review of your score(s) through a service called an Enquiry on Results (EOR).

    During the review process:

      • Test papers are re-marked by senior Examiners/Markers, who are not aware of the original marks awarded for each test section (Listening, Reading, Writing or Speaking)
      • Your test center is then notified of the re-mark result and if the mark has changed, they issue a new Test Report Form (TRF).

You will need to pay an Enquiry on Results fee, which is fully refunded if your band score changes. Contact your test center for more information about fees.

Your result can become available on the same day as your application and up to 21 days after your application. The time it takes depends on several factors, including the number of sections you’ve asked us to re-mark. If you have not received a response after 21 days, please contact your test center.

Preparing to take your test again:
To get a better score on your IELTS test, think about ways to improve your English. This could include checking you understand the test structure, working through sample questions, and learning how our scoring works.

Try to practice English at home and in real-life situations so that you feel more confident. Visit our Preparation page for more useful resources and advice.
